A READING WITH THE YULETIDE TAROT
This month is perfect for the Yuletide Tarot by Kristoffer Hughes with art by Erin O’Leary Brown. I’m using a modified version of the Three Ghosts Spread featured in the guidebook. But first, let’s reflect on the meaning of Yule.
Dating back thousands of years, the celebration of Yule occurs on the date of the Winter Solstice. In the northern hemisphere, it’s the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It’s a holiday rooted in ancient pagan traditions that honor the cycles of nature and the rebirth of the sun, marking the time when the sun begins its return journey, symbolizing light overcoming darkness and the promise of renewal.
Festivities often included lighting Yule logs, feasting, singing, and decorating with evergreens like holly and mistletoe, which were seen as symbols of life and protection during the dark winter months. Over time, many Yule traditions were incorporated into Christmas celebrations, such as the use of Yule logs and evergreen decorations, blending pagan and Christian customs.

Card 1 – Ace of Canes/Ace of Wands
Aces signify new beginnings and the Ace of Wands in particular reminds us that although we may be full of new ideas, action is required in order to make our dreams come true.
Card 2 – Moon
The Moon can signify dreams, but there may be a feeling of uncertainty,. We need to take time to reflect and acknowledge where we may be falling short. If we listen to our inner voice, we can see our way through to the next step.
Card 3 – Page of Canes/Page of Wands
This card emphasizes the theme of being on the verge of a creative phase. Perhaps the action required by Card 1 has been taken; we have listened to our intuition and decided to move forward. Look for news or information about your vision which can in turn act as a catalyst for positive change.
