Happy Nine of Cups!
Today’s tarot musing is brought to you by the Nine of Cups. The selection of this card is not in any way random. In fact, I dug through my cabinet of tarot decks to find the deck I wanted – The Housewives Tarot – because I know that the Nine of Cups there shows a Christmas tree and that’s just exactly the mood I’m in today so I shuffled through the cards face-up to find this card. The Housewives Tarot, by the way, is a kitschy little deck based on domestic images from the 1950’s featuring spunky housewives and their arsenal of household gear. It’s a fun deck and a great addition to any collection.
Nine of Cups is often referred to as ‘the wish card’ because when it appears in a reading it’s said to mean that you will get your wish. There is a feeling of abundance in terms of material success as well as emotional well-being, a feeling of satisfaction, or the promise of fulfillment.
I love how this card shows that energy with the Christmas tree and the happy couple. As I write this, my lovely little tree is lit, all of my Christmas tasks (for now) are complete and I’m experiencing a feeling expressed best by the Danish term “hygge”, which means a general sense of coziness and comfortable well-being.
When this card appears, we may well be simply be focused on life’s simple pleasures rather than its many challenges. We may be enjoying the arts or involved in their production. Maybe we’re giving a dinner party or some other gathering of friends and family. There may be the anticipation of a romantic liaison. It could even mean a successful business deal. In general, we feel safe, happy, and fulfilled. What is a better analogy than the anticipation that we often feel during the holidays?
The Christmas holiday is only a few days away. Many of can look forward to time spent with family and friends, which is quite an enjoyable contrast to last year. Today is the Winter Solstice and as we move reflectively into the longest night of the year, it’s a great time to remain focused on what is bright and beautiful in the world. I am lighting a candle this evening inscribed with my dearest wishes for me, for those near and dear to me, and for all of you who have followed me through this journey. I wish you the wonderful energy of the Nine of Cups and the happiest of holidays!
